Rice Paper Crisp - Food with Mae-11

Prawn Rice Paper Crisp

Budget friendly dish that is crunchy and a great snack or appetizer!

I kept seeing rice paper crisp online so I had to make it and it did not disappoint. It was easy to make, it’s crunchy and I don’t have a lot of ingredients to make it. I say, if you’re looking to save some extra penny this is a great snack or appetizer for your date or family.

SEAWEED: If you are making some with seaweed. You place the (dry) seaweed on a plate, dunk the rice paper in water then place it on the seaweed and push it (or massage) it onto the rice paper until they are stuck together. You can keep the seaweed that’s hanging off or you can trim it. Cut them into four pieces and fry them like how you would with the prawns.

SWAP IT AND COMMON QUESTIONS

Can I use bacon? No, I tried this and it made it soggy and not crispy. You need to find something that won’t water while cooking and thin.

Can I use larger rice paper? Yes of course

You use beef tallow in your cooking video, how was that? I love frying with beef tallow, it actually makes it more crispier and tastes amazing too. It doesn’t overpower the taste of the food you’re cooking, which is good.

Rice Paper Crisp - Food with Mae-11

Ingredients

10 small rice paper
5 imitate crab sticks or seaweed
Cooking oil of your choice
Dipping sauce of your choice

Instructions

1

In a frying pan, start heating your cooking oil for frying on medium heat.

2

Assemble the crisp together by slicing the crab sticks in half, place it on top of the dry rice paper but about an inch apart. Then with another rice paper, dunk it in water and place it on top of the dry rice paper with crab sticks. Pushing the wet paper down until it sticks to the dry paper. Making sure that there are air gaps betweens the rice papers. As soon as the rice paper is stuck together, using scissors, cut them in half or into rectangles.

3

Check if the oil is hot by using a small piece of off cut rice paper. When the rice paper puffs and  turns white in seconds it’s ready.

4

Place the rice paper and prawn into the cooking oil and cook until they are puffy. Take them out of the oil and into a dish with a paper towel. Do this with all the rice paper & prawns you make. If you are making some with seaweed, see my instructions above.

5

Transfer the cooked rice paper & prawn crisp into a serving bowl and serve with your favourite sauce.
